Marine Corps League Det. 1083 Meeting Minutes:
12 May 2026, at Akademia, 150 Crane Drive, Athens, GA 30606, Fellowship at 1800 hrs. Meeting start at 1900 hrs.
- 19:04 – Call to Order, Post the Colors / Pledge, Marines Hymn, Meeting Opening & Staff Roll Call.
Head count: 18 in attendance. Sgt at Arms secures hatch; Adjutant roll call. - 19:05 – Two of the attendees were members of the Maj Stephen W. Pless (MOH) Vietnam #1196 Detachment, in Griffin. Carol Griffin, Vice Commandant of District 4 and Charlie Santoriello
- 1905 – Chappy made a motion to suspend the rules until the end of meeting. The motion was seconded by Jim Wood and was approved by unanimous consent through a voice vote.
- 19:08 – Opening prayer.

- 19:22 – There was a call for volunteers to carry the names of the fallen during the Dacula Memorial Day Parade, on Monday, May 25.
- 19:23 – Chappy mentioned an event happening at Oconee Veterans Park.

- Kung-fu is in rehab at The Oaks, located at 490 Kathwood Drive.
- Beep’s father died yesterday.
- Brooks, the Sgt. At arms, is having health problems.
- Mike Powers has flown out to Italy for a 3-week trip.
- Rusty is getting knee surgery tomorrow.
- An officer from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department was in a shootout earlier in the day, resulting in the death of a citizen.
- 19:28 – Three Deceased Marines from the detachment were recognized in the Semper FI Magazine.

- 19:31 – Oscar La Madrid is having a veterans tent at a Fourth of July event in Colbert.
- 19:32 – Ms. Griffin addressed the Detachment, and she relayed that:
- The only Uniform requirement for MCL members is the cover.
- All females, including those who are Marines, may join the Auxiliary.
- Vet tech 2.0 is available to some veterans.
- The Department of Georgia has started a newsletter that the detachment may send pictures and details of events to the editor of the newsletter for publication.
- The Young Marines unit needs a leader.
- The national webpage is being improved. MC League Link can be used for transmittals, including death notifications

- 19:38 – There is a Warriors Honor Cruise
- 19:39 – Matthew Johnson spoke about his legal services and veterans’ benefits.
- Chappy’s son was discharged from the Marine Corps for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. His son was given a discharge characterization of general (under honorable conditions), but it was upgraded to an honorable discharge, and his son is getting back pay.
- 19:40 – Ms. Griffin updated the detachment about the results of the new elections at the recent department convention.
- Lisa Delk was elected commandant.
- Alton Coleman was elected senior vice commandant
- Reggie Brand was elected junior vice commandant.
- 19:43 – Charlie Santoriello was recognized. He served in the Marine Corps from 1963 until 1967 and was a member of 2/7. He served in Hawaii, Vietnam, Okinawa, and Long Beach.
- 19:44 – Chappy made a motion to reinstate the bylaws. The motion was seconded by Jim Wood and was approved by unanimous consent through a voice vote.
- Future Meeting Announcements: nothing new or unusual, next meeting will be Tuesday, 6 June 2026.
